In order to provide the required services to our clients, the society has established a worldwide network of  surveyors distributed throughout the major ports of the world. The staff consists mainly of highly qualified naval architects, marine engineers, master mariners and other engineers and technical personnel with relevant qualifications. We believe in the potential of people and in systematic training and education of all our staff members. IRS's Head Office is in Panama City, Panama.

As an independent organization, IRS acts with impartiality and objectivity as a self-regulating agency to the international marine industry, with the mission of serving the public interest as well as the needs of our clients by promoting the safety and security of life, property, and the natural environment primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities.

IRS establishes and administers Rules and Guidelines for the classification of ships, and other floating marine structures covering their design, construction, and operational maintenance for the purpose of determining the structural and mechanical fitness for their intended purpose.

Through the International Maritime Organization, the governments of the world's maritime nations have established various international maritime conventions containing regulations for protecting life, property and the environment. IRS has been authorized by 20 governments who are signatory to these conventions, to act on their behalf in conducting statutory surveys and issuing the necessary statutory certificates.

In pursuing its vision of becoming a reliable partner for the maritime world, whose name will evoke an image of safety, quality and concern for the environment, IRS is concentrating on key areas of customer satisfaction such as focus on our customers' needs, expectations and opinions, understanding their business, treat them as important partners, share our experience with our customers while maintaining customer confidentiality, involve them in enhancing our services, and ensure uniform services.

We are also continually developing, so customers, authorities and the public is able to trust and accept our services. Our technology is state of the art, we are experts in our areas of competence, we provide uniform services worldwide, and our independence is sustained by integrity, objectivity and impartiality.

In addition to being a classification society, IRS is able to offer a broad range of consulting and training services well suited for ship owners and other stakeholders within the maritime industry.

We maintain a management system satisfying applicable international and national standards for classification and statutory certification, training, consulting and third party inspection services. IRS' quality management system has been certified to ISO 9001:2008 standard.

We comply with all applicable laws and regulations in all our operations.
