Maritime Security Services

To enhance maritime security, the International Maritime Organization has adopted a new comprehensive security regime for international shipping, through the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, which is set to enter into force in July 2004.

International Register of Shipping (IRS) through its divisions has developed several services to help the maritime community to comply with the ISPS Code as well as build an effective security regime for the maritime community.

ISPS code in essence, approaches the issue of ensuring security as a risk management activity, which involves assessment of security risks and vulnerabilities and taking measures to reduce the risk levels, that is reducing the probability of occurrence as well as reducing the consequences in the event of a security incident.

As an organization with expertise in risk management and our past experience in Safety Management Systems, IRS is the right choice, for the shipping community to rely on, for assistance in implementation of the code. Realizing our role, we have established a cooperation with a reputed American Security Organization, Maritime Security Services, Inc. for providing various services.

Following are examples of maritime security related services, various divisions of IRS have developed.

Advisory Services
Following advisory services are offered through International Register Management Systems (IRMS), the division of IRS engaged in providing Management System Related Services:

  • Ship Security Assessment
  • Preparation of Ship Security Plans

  • Port Facility Security Officers – 18 hours
  • ISPS Code Auditors – 20 hours

These programs are designed to meet the criteria laid down in the ISPS Code as well as other guidance available through IMO and other Industry sources. These programs are now available at various major maritime locations around the world.
